A Nutanix volume group is a collection of logically related virtual disks, also described as vDisks or volumes.
The group provides block-storage resources that can be attached directly to guest VMs or presented through iSCSI to supported consumers. Grouping the disks allows them to be administered, attached, protected, cloned, and managed as a related storage entity.
A storage pool aggregates physical storage capacity contributed by cluster nodes. Storage containers are logical subdivisions created within a storage pool and hold virtual disks. Consequently, a volume group can use vDisks created on Nutanix storage, but it is not a collection of pools or containers. Controller VMs run the distributed storage and cluster services on individual nodes and are unrelated to volume-group membership.
Each volume group has its own name and UUID, and administrators can add or remove virtual disks according to platform limitations. A group may be associated with one or more consumers depending on the attachment mode and supported use case. This structure is particularly suitable for applications requiring shared block devices, direct iSCSI access, or multiple related application volumes.
